Chinese Consul General makes his inaugural visit to Minnesota

Newly appointed Consul General Yang Guoqiang for the Consulate General of the People’s Republic China in Chicago recently visited with representatives of the Chinese community in Minnesota at a meeting organized by community leader, Vincent Mar.  Making his first visit to Minnesota, Consul General Yang traveled with his wife along with several other staff Consul members based at the Consulate in Chicago.
In his opening remarks to the gathering, Consul General Yang stated that he was pleased to be visiting Minnesota since it is one of the nine states that his consulate covers which also includes Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, Michigan, Missouri and Wisconsin.  He noted that during recent times there have been many meaningful contacts between China and the midwest region of the United States.

Thus he states, “My consulate is committed to further promoting cooperation and exchanges between the two sides in various fields, protecting the legal rights of Chinese citizens in the consular districts and providing consular services related to passport, visa, notary public and authentification to both local Chinese and non-Chinese people.”

Yinghua Academy receives STARTALK grant for summer camps

Academy received US$99,979 from the National Foreign Language Center STARTALK Program to develop two Chinese immersion summer camp classes.  The two-week camps will feature a total immersion setting providing students with opportunities to learn key vocabulary and skills through activities in a fun, "hands-on," camp environment. Activities focus on the children's Chinese language practice process: interact with other students, express needs, and understand instructions. Students are divided by age group and prior language ability.  No prior foreign language experience is necessary. Contact the school for registration and need-based scholarship information.

Census Bureau conducts historic campaign to encourage Asian participation in 2010 Census

With advertisements in 13 Asian languages and promotional materials in many more, the Census Bureau [Mar. 11] provided an overview of the historic campaign it is conducting to encourage all members of the Asian community to fill out and mail back their 2010 Census forms.

AAJC launches Census 2010 Web site

WASHINGTON — In leading the effort to ensure that Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians are accurately counted in the upcoming census, the Asian American Justice Center and its partners launched a Web site to serve as a clearinghouse for census materials aimed at AAPI communities.
