Minnesota-China partnership grows

“This agreement will expand Chinese language opportunities for Minnesota students so they can obtain the skills necessary for success in an economy where interculturalism will be an essential element,” said Education Commissioner Alice Seagren. “As we build upon the Minnesota-China partnership, we look forward to strengthening the ties between the citizens of our respective communities.”

Minnesota students who enroll in classes made possible by this partnership will gain access to high-quality and multicultural education that trains them for future personal, academic and professional success.

In addition, this agreement will foster the sharing of knowledge and culture between Minnesota and China. The Memorandum of Understanding signed by MDE and Hanban is consistent with the Minnesota-China Partnership between the state of Minnesotaand China established in 2005 and discussed by Governor Tim Pawlenty and China’s Ambassador, Zhou Wenzhong. Through this agreement, an education model and the necessary teacher capacity will be built to continue robust Chinese language and cultural education in years to come.

MDE will working close coordination with the Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota to provide training for visiting teachers, address the current U.S.educational and cultural situation and provide tips on how to live in Minnesota and other information necessary for a smooth transition to teaching in Minnesota schools.

“Visiting teachers selected by MDE and Hanban will be well-prepared and qualified toteach in Minnesota schools and promote high-quality academic standards for students learning Chinese language and culture,” said John Melick, Director of Educator Licensing. “We look forward to inviting and providing support for Minnesota school districts to participate in this opportunity.”
