This spring, Minneapolis will present a high quality Chinese music concert—the Age of Crossover, the theme, which indicates the communication among different cultures and different musicians.  This concert will feature one of the oldest cultural groups in Minnesota—the Minnesota Chinese Ensemble, along with a group of orchestral players from the Twin Cities area.

The music selections include traditional Chinese pieces, as well as two original compositions; Beautiful Moon Lake was commissioned for this performance and composed by the esteemed Ying Zhang. The other original piece Deep Water is written by Carleton Macy, a Macalester College professor, composer and a long term mentor of the Ensemble. Two orchestral compositions, written by contemporary Chinese masters, are being borrowed from the People Publishing House in China. There are also a few Western pieces of music arranged by Marina Liadova, who is the artistic director of Lidia Productions, the producer of this concert. Two visual artists (Sang Yim and Patty Schwartz) were invited to create their paintings in relation to the particular pieces of music. The audience will watch these paintings “evolve” on the screen during the performance.

The Age of Crossover concert will take place at the Highland Park High School Auditorium (1015 Snelling Avenue South, St. Paul, MN) on May 16, 2010 at 7 p.m. For tickets and more information visit the Web site www.lidiaproductions.org
